Documenting Black Urbanisms: A Primer on Motivations and Methods 〰️

I grew up around lenses - both as my grandmother’s camcorder subject to an admirer of my grandfather’s jazz excursions. All throughout college, I casually brought my point-and-shoot to pivotal moments and mundane alike.

However, my environmental portraiture practice began in Los Angeles around 2015 with my mobile phone as I studied landscapes during doctoral studies. When the idea of “Black urbanism” came to mind from reading works from Sara Zewde, Paul Goodwin, Kristin Jeffers, and others, it evolved into a more dedicated still-photography practice in 2017. I decided to weigh in on the topic through channeling photography to publicly preserve lives and lands in flux amid gentrification and succession in Los Angeles. As I moved to the historic North Central Philadelphia in 2018, I began to evolve my practice to film-based cameras (medium format and 35mm).

The Instagram page has the latest blend of both images that are not on view during physical exhibitions. I reserve all rights to any photos displayed here and ask that you attribute them to me by linking to this website. Until then.
